Talk The Talk – Your Basic Guide To Internet Marketing Lingo
Humans are social animals that belong to a symbolic system. Language is a primary source of communication and is thereby a symbol of civilization in itself. Therefore when entering in to a virtual environment for the first time it is important that you speak the lingo of your peers in order to truly reap the benefits of an online marketing system. When making an attempt at marketing, your research will eventually bring you to stumble across a hodgepodge of terms such as SEO, PPC, FFA and many more. In order to avoid being drowned in this ocean of acronyms, make sure that you become familiar with such terms in order to ensure your survival within an online market environment.
SEO or ‘Search Engine Optimization’ is the process of ensuring that your website shows up on top when searched on a search engine. One can make their website search engine friendly by tweaking the web design and content in a way that enables you to trick the search engine in to featuring your site on top. This is done with the utilization of key words. A key word is a word that is intentionally repeated within an article or site so that it appears more frequently than usual to an allocated key word density. Key word density refers to the number of times that a key word should be used in an article and is dependent on the length of the article. Therefore when choosing a key word one must always chose a term that a customer is likely to search on a search engine; spelling mistakes and all (if there are frequently made ones). Ex: someone accidently typing ‘liek’ for ‘like’.
SEM or ‘Search Engine Marketing’ is quite unlike SEO. It is the process of researching, submitting and the insertion of a website in to varying SE directories. In this situation too keyword targeting is considered. Directories on the other hand are man made lists of websites that are almost always arranged in accordance to topic. They too can be searched by keywords and are therefore similar to SEs.
ROI refers to ‘Return on Investment’ in the online marketing world. This like in any business is the amount of profit that is generated through investing in either PPC programs, search engine submission, paid listings or any other actions.
PPC; ‘Pay Per Click’ is an advertising mechanism where one bids for certain keyword phrases or terms and then pays the SE to place an ad on those search results. The search engines will charge the person every time a potential customer clicks on your link. You can see such ads on the right hand side of many SEs.
CPC; ‘Cost Per Click’ is a savvy term for the amount of money the search engine charges the webmaster each time a PPC ad gets a click. The usual rates for CPC range from 10 cents to $100 per click. Though this holds true there are also many other listings that appear up front and center on search engines without a dime spent. ‘Natural’ or ‘Organic Listings’ are residents of the unpaid area of search engine results. This is obtained mainly by having a good SEO or by being recommended by a human editor.
Learning the lingo is a fraction of what one must be familiar with in order to begin successful online marketing. But it is still an immensely important addition and will boost you ahead when starting your own online businesses. Make sure that when in the business, you not only walk the walk, but talk the talk as well.
